A bit late on this one, but anything worth it’s salt is more than a passing fancy, right? It’s also a curious beastie, not so much for the imagining, but the presentation. Let’s face it, speculative architecture is often no more than unreasonable architecture, but that’s no reason not to design. Hence the fact that this Joseph Cory Geotectura creation is both wonderful and weird.

This design for Tokyo utilises electromagnetic fields, generated by photovoltaic cells embedded in the sides of the structures, allowing “infinite vertical and horizontal expansions due to the final liberation from gravity”. Wind turbines and water recycling systems will allow the ‘cubes’ to be completely self-sufficient.
All good stuff, but what planet are they on? I know Japan can look mighty strange to a gaijin like me, but the pyramids threw me a bit. And unless the end-time is near or something, that moon is surely just a little close for comfort…

Reminded me of an old comic anthology called “Vanguard” from Pacific Comics (mid-80’s and part of the big movement in direct sales). In that anthology was a strip called “Freakwave” (which I suspect was source material for the movie “Waterworld”). That feature, from the duo of Milligan and McCarthy, included these giant floating heads. The designs and the artwork were very cool and if you have the opportunity, you might pick one up and take a look.
McCarthy’s the guy who did ‘Skin’, right? That kicked serious ass.
I’ve never heard of ‘Freakwave’, but looking at some storyboards for a movie of the strip, I think you’re dead on with the ‘Waterworld’ comment! [link]
I’ll see if I can find some of the original artwork somewhere. The very idea of ‘giant floating heads’ is intriguing…
Never thought to look at McCarthy’s site. And have to confess I’m unfamiliar with “Skin”. After going back to art school I didn’t have the money to keep up with all the stuff out there (not that it mattered too much; my taste was, by then, decidedly underground… e.g. Yummy Fur, Metropol, etc).
To this day I’ve imagined a virtual world with those heads in it.
Obviously we need to take into consideration, that the polar ice caps have melted. Sheesh.
D’oh! My stupid. The moon looks ready for a dip, though. Is that a side-effect of global warming too? It could be an asteroid attack, I suppose.
